A male suspect who jumped into the water of the Mare Island Strait while fleeing from police this morning was found attempting to exit the water and taken into police custody just after 5 a.m., according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer John Eastman.

The suspect was allegedly breaking into cars near Vallejo City Hall on Santa Clara Street before he fled from police, Eastman said.

He apparently ran toward the ferry terminal and jumped into the water around 3:45 a.m., Eastman said.

Police lost sight of the suspect and called in the Coast Guard to assist in the search, according to Eastman.

A Coast Guard boat from the Vallejo station and a Coast Guard search helicopter were deployed, Eastman said.

The suspect was found trying to leave the water and taken into police custody, Eastman said.
